Jazz and activism have gone hand in hand for over a hundred years. Jazz and understanding too. The 51st edition of Jazz Middelheim therefore closes with Le ravage d’Ali Baba, a project of the De Koffie van Morgen collective, which aims to paint a human and insightful picture of the situation of refugees – beyond the headlines and tweets. Together with members of SCHNTZL, Nordmann and Hypochristmutreefuzz, among others, jazz drummer Simon Plancke set to work to capture the stories of refugees in a kind of musique concrète – a mix of catchy testimonials, hypnotic soundscapes and strong melodies.
