In autumn 2017, Philip Catherine celebrated his 75th birthday with a memorable concert in special line-up including two pianists and two drummers. He was subsequently invited with this repertoire to several festivals such as the 2018 North Sea Jazz festival and the 2019 Jazz Sous les Pommiers festival in Coutances.
Everyone and also PHilip himself was very enthusiastic about these concerts together with his two favourite pianists. A live album of this concert will also be released on the Outhere Music label in 2021.
With Dutch pianist Bert van den Brink, Philip Catherine has a very long relationship, including their duo and various other formations over the years. Their ensemble playing is exceptional and inspiring.
Italian pianist Nicola Andrioli has been part of his quartet since before the release of Philip’s beautiful album “Coté Jardin” in 2012, on which he plays an important role. His gift as a composer has also come to fruition over the years, and Philip currently plays several compositions by Andrioli. Meeting the young Beninese percussionist Angelo Moustapha was a happy coincidence : During a workshop PHilip gave in Benin in February 2019, Angelo – who was already a big fan of Philip’s – had also signed up and the spark between the two immediately struck. When Angelo came to Brussels a few months later, PHilip immediately invited him for a first guest appearance on two songs at his October 2019 concert at “40 Years Jazz Hoeilaart” (where he performed with his trio with Morello-Faller). It became a great success. Since then, Angelo has been playing regularly with Philip in various formations.
