Adolphe Sax would have been proud! Sunday 12 August, also the last day of the festival, is almost entirely dedicated to the saxophone. When one saxophone legend honours another, you know jazz history is being written. Archie Shepp’s Tribute to John Coltrane is a once in a lifetime concert, made even more phenomenal by Randy Brecker on trumpets. Before that, Steve Coleman & The Five Elements will take over the Main Stage. For many of his contemporaries, saxophonist Coleman fits in the same list as Charlie Parker, Ornette Coleman and, also, John Coltrane. Saxophonist Robin Verheyen and pianist Bram De Looze team up with American percussionist and lifelong sparring partner of John Zorn, Bill Frisell & Marc Copland, Joey Baron. The Main Stage will be opened by Aka Moon, the Belgian jazz trio that integrates Eastern and African rhythms into their repertoire, producing a unique sound.
On the Club Stage, Mâäk Spirit celebrates its twentieth anniversary. As one of the most active avant-garde jazz formations in Belgium, they perform in four different set-ups: Mâäk 4tet, Mâäk Five, Mâäk Quintet and finally their Big Ensemble!
