Michel Portal has been around for so long that he can say that he still made records in the 1960s with Sunny Murray and Karlheinz Stockhausen – two very different names that also indicate how versatile the career of the French bass clarinetist has always been. His nickname? Michel Polyvalent Portal. He will turn 85 at the end of this year, and that blessed age seemed to him a good excuse for an eclectic and – Lander Gyselinck and Bojan Z are participating – surprising party. Because Portal can come from both classical and avant-garde, but that of course also applies to Gyselinck and the other virtuoso musicians with whom the living legend will share the stage in Park Den Brandt this summer.
