Belgium doesn’t exactly have a shortage of high-profile jazz drummers: Lander Gyselinck, Dré Pallemaerts, Stéphane Galland, Teun Verbruggen, Antoine Pierre, and we could go on for a Buddy Rich solo. The youngest member is Samuel Ber. And that he can already measure up to his predecessors is what he will show (and hear) at Jazz Middelheim this summer in four different formations.

And then there’s Reservoir Ghosts, a very special quartet that underlines two things: 1. Ber knows like no other how to bring the right musicians together, in this case Danish saxophonist Lotte Anker, American cellist Daniel Levin and Belgian double bassist Soet Kempeneer. 2. Samuel Ber is not only a brilliant drummer, he is also a talented composer whose complex compositions provide space for each musician to explore his instrument and reinvent his role in a jazz quartet. And while we’re at it: 3. The Belgian drummer is the Rem Koolhaas of jazz – a groundbreaking architect who manages to keep things upright in almost magical ways.
