Belgium does not have a shortage of high-profile jazz drummers: Lander Gyselinck, Dré Pallemaerts, Stéphane Galland, Teun Verbruggen, Antoine Pierre, and so we can continue with a solo by Buddy Rich. The youngest member is called Samuel Ber. And that he can already compete with his predecessors, he will show (and hear) this summer at Jazz Middelheim in four different formations.

Ber will close that day with the trio Malaby / Dumoulin / Ber – a small miracle, noted De Standaard, because the American saxophonist Tony Malaby is a New York icon, “and the fact that he saw this project says a lot about the talent of Ber. ” But of course it also says a lot about the status of Jozef Dumoulin, whose keyboards and Fender Rhodes helped ensure that Maps & Synecdoches, the debut album of the trio, has become such an alien quirky curiosity. “Bold”, “mysterious”, “suspenseful”, “inventive” are just a few of the words that regularly crop up in reviews – both from the album and from the trio’s concerts. “Improvisation” is another one of those, by the way. But also know that behind every song by Malaby / Dumoulin / Ber very ingenious compositions by the latter
